Off-Grid Solar Installation, Operations and Maintenance Guide
From pre-installation review and safe construction to commissioning, customer training and preventive maintenance.
Installation quality determines whether the approved design performs safely in the field. A complete workflow verifies the design, controls site hazards, installs mechanical and electrical systems, tests every operating mode, documents baseline readings and teaches the customer how to operate and maintain the system.
Do not start installation until the latest design, SLD, equipment schedule and site conditions agree.
Use a site-specific safety plan for work at height, DC electrical hazards, batteries and lifting.
Commission the complete system under charging, normal load, surge and low-battery conditions.
Preventive maintenance should track trends, not only respond after failure.
1. Pre-Installation Review
Confirm design, materials, access, responsibilities and safety before work begins.
Review customer requirements, load audit, autonomy target, drawings and latest approved scope.
Verify module stringing, controller limits, battery configuration, inverter rating and protection schedule.
Check delivered model numbers, quantities, ratings, physical condition and serial numbers.
Confirm roof or ground condition, access, lifting plan, storage area and weather constraints.
Identify concealed services, existing electrical hazards and isolation requirements.
Conduct a pre-start briefing and record responsibilities for supervision, testing and customer communication.
2. Site Safety Controls
Control fall, electrical, battery, lifting and environmental hazards.
Use suitable fall-prevention or fall-arrest controls for roof work.
Treat PV conductors as energized whenever modules receive light.
Cover modules or use an approved isolation method where practical during DC work.
Use insulated tools, suitable PPE and controlled battery handling procedures.
Keep ignition sources away from batteries that may release flammable gas.
Maintain clear access, housekeeping, weather awareness and an emergency response plan.
3. Mechanical Installation
Install foundations, mounting and modules without compromising structure or drainage.
Set out the approved array location, orientation, tilt and row spacing.
Use approved fasteners, anchors, clamps and corrosion-compatible materials.
Maintain roof waterproofing and designed drainage paths.
Apply manufacturer clamp zones and tightening torque.
Protect modules from impact, twisting, walking and unsupported handling.
Provide service access and record the final installed layout.
4. Electrical Installation
Install DC, battery and AC equipment according to the approved SLD.
Route, support and identify PV string cables before connecting them.
Verify connector compatibility, conductor polarity and string arrangement.
Install DCDB, isolators, fuses, breakers and SPDs with accessible labels.
Install batteries in the approved configuration with rack, clearances, fuse and isolation.
Install inverter/controller with ventilation, service clearance and environmental protection.
Complete AC essential-load distribution, earthing and bonding before energization.
5. Commissioning Sequence
Verify workmanship and settings before placing the system into service.
Perform visual inspection, mechanical checks and conductor continuity checks.
Verify PV polarity and measure string open-circuit voltage before connection.
Verify battery polarity, voltage, state of charge, BMS status and protection.
Confirm controller and inverter settings match the battery and system design.
Energize in the manufacturer-approved sequence and monitor abnormal sound, heat or alarms.
Test charging, normal load, largest planned surge, low-battery warning, cut-off and recovery.
Record voltage, current, power, state of charge, frequency, alarms and monitoring operation.
6. Customer Operations
Teach the customer how to preserve backup and respond safely.
Explain the approved backed-up loads and prohibited or separately sized loads.
Demonstrate normal start, normal shutdown and emergency isolation.
Explain state of charge, available backup, low-sun operation and generator support if present.
Show monitoring screens, common alarms and when to call for service.
Explain module cleaning limits, battery-area access and ventilation requirements.
Provide operating instructions in language the responsible user understands.
7. Preventive Maintenance
Use planned inspections and baseline data to identify deterioration early.
Inspect modules for dirt, damage, discoloration, shade and loose cable support.
Inspect mounting for loose fasteners, corrosion, movement and water ingress.
Inspect DC/AC enclosures for heat marks, loose terminals, failed SPD indication and moisture.
Review battery state, temperatures, alarms, terminals, ventilation and capacity trend.
Review inverter/controller event logs, firmware needs and charging behavior.
Test shutdown labels, isolation access, earthing connections and monitoring communications.
Compare current readings with commissioning baseline and record corrective actions.
8. Troubleshooting Discipline
Diagnose from records and measurements without bypassing protection.
Start with the alarm/event history, operating state and recent customer load changes.
Confirm safe isolation before opening equipment or disconnecting battery/PV circuits.
Measure at defined points and compare with the SLD and commissioning baseline.
Do not bypass fuses, BMS limits, isolators or interlocks to keep the system running.
Replace components only with compatible ratings and update the serial register.
Document root cause, corrective action, settings changed and post-repair test results.

Demonstrate isolation, alarms, expected backup and low-sun operation.
Agree cleaning and preventive-maintenance responsibilities.
Record unresolved limitations or excluded loads clearly.
Obtain customer acceptance only after training and document delivery.
